Our newly built engineering offices house the latest in advanced CAD software linked by a high speed data network. Each tool is designed around a customer-specific application. In addition to the traditional
engineering questions such as type of machine the tool is to be used with, the wood species, the RPM and feed rate, the desired number of knife marks per inch, etc. we consider additional factors such as user friendliness,
case of indexing knives, the set-up time and replacement knife cost as a crucial part of the design criteria. We quickly design a custom tool from drawings or files supplied via diskette, modem, or the internet.
Dynamic balance of a cutting tool has a tremendous impact on performance. Balance affects the machine, the surface finish of the work piece and the longevity of the insert knives. DeHart uses dynamic balancing
equipment and monitors each cutter body for a balance rating of Q2.5 or lower.
The integrity of a cutter body begins with the arbor hole. DeHart maintains a critical bore tolerance by precision honing. This establishes the foundation for milling the insert seat pockets concentric to
the bore and ensures a precise fit to the machine spindle. Each cutter body is precision honed to absolute accuracy and is inspected with digital bore gauges for critical diameter and roundness at every phase of the manufacturing
operation.
The major benefits of insert tooling are the ease of set-up and repeatability of the knives. In order to achieve this, the actual insert knife seat pocket must be concentric to the bore. DeHart’s manufacturing
process ensures that the seat pocket is precisely in relation to the bore. Each wing of every cutter body is individually measured and inspected before advancing to the next manufacturing phase of the manufacturing operation.
To further ensure the ease of indexing and repeatability, all DeHart cutter bodies are produced with precision ground hubs that are critically monitored for parallelism and perpendicularity to the bore. Hubs are precision surface ground and side reference
location washers are installed to a constant depth measured off the hub surface.
